Care for Your Voice – Starting September 2020

Covid-19 has hit the world extremely hard, and many people have been at home
and unable to work. For people whose livelihood depends on using their voice, like actors, singers, public speakers and teachers, returning back to normal work can be a daunting thought. The impact of Covid-19 on our lives, and the anxiety of returning to the unknown, has caused immense levels of stress for many. Stress is known to cause problems for your voice, as it increases tension on your core, which affects your breathing and digestion, all of which affect the voice and put tension on the vocal cords. Fine Voice would like to help you learn to prevent these tensions, improve diaphragm support to recover from the loss of muscle tone and focus on correct breathing. We want to help you to gain natural resonance without effort which will help you through those difficult weeks of your return.
It is important to know how your voice will behave and have confidence in being able to perform every day without vocal fatigue and thus causing damage, much like the rest of your body, your voice needs a regular safe workout.

Fine Voice Academy is known for its dedication to the voice as an instrument for singing and performing on stage, but we also work with teachers, celebrants and public speakers. We are aware people are facing increased tension in their vocal activity, particularly for teachers and public speakers returning to work after this long break. For this reason, we have put together the “Care for Your Voice” series of online workshops to help you better prepare yourself in returning to work. Sign up for this free workshop, and if you find it useful, you can sign up to a series of three more workshops throughout September covering things in more detail. The workshops will include knowledge and advice on the workings of your voice, tips in what to do and what not to do, some handouts and exercises for you to use and we will share some of our personal routines and experiences.

I founded Fine Voice Academy with a commitment to teaching students to learn to sing in a correct, safe and informative way. The Italian vocal teaching techniques taught at Fine Voice Academy are formed from experience learnt through my own studies over the last 40 years. My early training of the Italian art of Bel Canto, my studies in London at the Alternative Drama School, my experience in Musical Theatre and Opera studies in Italy inform my practice and my teaching. My interest in teaching voice came from my own teacher, tenor, Maestro Marcello Merlini who himself takes referrals of performers who have vocal issues from the Milan area hospitals. Marcello has been a great source of information, experiences and proven practice which once again informs and underpins my own training at the Academy.

I was delighted to be invited to be a guest speaker at a European conference in Slovakia which gathered a large number of educationalists who were interested in the importance of ‘Creativity’ in the curriculum. The focus of this presentation was around ‘the voice and self-confidence’.
